Panasonic Professor of Robotics (emeritus) at MIT, Founder and former Chairman and CTO of Rethink Robotics, Australian Roboticist
Rodney Brooks is a prominent roboticist and entrepreneur known for his pioneering work in artificial intelligence and robotics. Born on April 30, 1954, in Australia, he completed his undergraduate degree in pure mathematics and his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Adelaide. Brooks is best known for developing innovative approaches to robotics that emphasize behavior-based systems, allowing robots to interact more intuitively with their environments. His work at MIT, where he was a professor and director of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, has significantly influenced the field of robotics, particularly in the areas of autonomous systems and human-robot interaction.
In addition to his academic achievements, Brooks co-founded several influential companies, including iRobot, which is famous for its Roomba vacuum cleaner, and Rethink Robotics, known for its collaborative robots. His vision of creating robots that can operate in everyday environments has shaped both consumer products and industrial automation. Brooks’s contributions extend beyond technical advancements; he has also been an advocate for responsible AI development and has spoken widely on the implications of robotics in society. Through his work, he has inspired a new generation of researchers and entrepreneurs to explore the potential of robotics and AI.
He is the recipient of numerous and prestigious awards, including the 2023 IEEE Founders Medal, the Computers and Thought Award at the 1991 IJCAI (International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence). In 2008 he won the IEEE Inaba Technical Award for Innovation Leading to Production. In 2014 he won the Robotics Industry Association’s Engelberger Robotics Award for Leadership.
