Ed Catmull, an American computer scientist and former president of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, is widely recognized for his pioneering contributions to the field of computer graphics. Born on March 31, 1945, in Parkersburg, West Virginia, Catmull was fascinated by both art and technology from a young age. He pursued this dual interest by earning a degree in physics and computer science from the University of Utah, where he developed groundbreaking techniques in computer graphics, including texture mapping and bicubic patches. His work laid the foundation for modern computer animation, making him a pivotal figure in the evolution of the industry.

Catmull co-founded Pixar Animation Studios in 1986 with Alvy Ray Smith, after working in George Lucas’s Computer Division of Lucasfilm. At Pixar, Catmull played a crucial role in the development of RenderMan, a software that revolutionized 3D animation and rendering. Under his leadership, Pixar produced iconic films such as “Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo,” and “The Incredibles,” which set new standards in animation and storytelling. Catmull’s contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including five Academy Awards for technical achievements.
